Basic care

Just as we clean the clothes we wear, the sheets we sleep in or the towels we dry ourselves with, the jewels we wear also need to be cleaned frequently. The oil from our skin is one of the most important factors preventing our jewels from sparkling with their initial splendour, followed by cosmetics and perfumes, although we should also remember the atmospheric pollution in towns. All these elements build up on the internal parts of the pieces and the underside of the stones, diminishing their gleam.

The simplest way of cleaning them is to submerge them in hot water with a few drops of degreasing agent (washing-up liquid) and after around 5-10 minutes rub them with a soft hairbrush. Rinse thoroughly with water, dry with a hairdryer and rub with a special chamois for jewellery, which will bring out the shine in the piece and restore its initial appearance.

In any case, every piece has its own specific cleaning requirements, and this is particularly important when dealing with pearls and precious stones.
Another important factor that will help us conserve our jewels for much longer is storing them in the original case in a cool, DRY place.
